About The Joe #4

#106

I was afraid that picking an image so "precise" might push me to relapse into my over-controlling, obsessive-compulsive, picky and perfectionistic, anal, uptight, and stressed-out painting self. So it was risky. To say the least.

Alas! I survived. I was able to finish this without all the above tendencies re-surfacing. Maybe all my Daily Paint Works therapy sessions are working!

This was a fun painting. Even tho it may look somewhat "tight", it wasn't painted that way. I'm learning to put paint down and leave it alone. I'm learning that "close enough" sometimes works better than "dead on perfect". Who'da thought?

Complements

#049

This painting was done with what "purples" were left on my palette from the painting before it (Multi Purples). The grapes appear a bit more blue because I used up most of the reddish purples on the first painting. Maybe I should've made them blueberries! (history: The day before I mixed up as many different purples as I could.  Had some left over, and didn't want to mix more just for these few grapes. I don't paint with purple very often, and besides that, I'm "thrifty"... My sister would call that "cheap"! haha)

I'm really enjoying painting on the wooden panels! I put 2 coats of acrylic "gesso" on this one and then lightly sanded it before I painted. It was so smooth and even! Very nice to paint on. I definitely would recommend trying it if you haven't.

Hope everyone is staying warm, or at least thawing/digging out from this crazy weather! We're iced in up here in the north Georgia mountains, but there's plenty of fire wood. Even tho there's no sledding snow for my orange saucer, I'm still enjoying every minute of it!

On A Board

#045

This is my first painting on a board! How fun! I've had the thin wood slabs around for a couple months, and finally got them cut into 6" x 6" pieces. The paint just glides on! Smooth, smooth, smooth. I enjoyed it so much, I painted two pieces today. And it was the perfect day to paint and look out the window. I had to, after all, keep an eye on our anticipated winter storm.

I waited and waited....  I've been waiting.... all winter. :/  I still haven't had a chance to jump on my new orange saucer. It's been years since I flew down a snowy hill clinging to one of those things. Moving to the Atlanta area from Michigan really put a damper on that! None the less, I've since moved to the North Georgia Mountains... I know my chances are much better here. So far though, only rainy icy sleet. Tonight I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

If you don't hear from me tomorrow, you know what I'm doing! Weeeeeee!

Teapot With Plastic Pomegranate

#044

I do not like plastic fruit... period. I painted with a group today (Tuesday), and my seat was nearest this staged still life. We had fresh fruit except for the weird looking "pomegranate" on the left. Turns out that I couldn't get a good photo of this painting either... so all the fruit looks like plastic anyway. Ha! I'll try another photo tomorrow with different lighting... Seems I've been spending more time lately on trying to get my pictures right than I am on painting the pieces.

The painting below is one I did yesterday when I only had about an hour to paint. It's another example of my bad photography. I'll get it right.... eventually. :)

The name of this one is OJ By The Slice. I posted it on dailypaintworks.com. If you're interested in it, you can click here. Thanks for stopping by!

Friday With Friends

#042

This is a painting I did with friends on Friday. We set up a still life... Sonja brought the fruit, Susanne brought the bowl with fruit painted on it, and I brought a pitcher (I didn't paint it in). Turns out, what I brought really didn't fit in very well. You never know.

Since Friday I haven't painted. My sister and her friend, Linda, were here for the weekend, so we had lots of girlfriend time. Thank you, sis!! :)

Tomorrow I'll get painting! Feeling refreshed, relaxed, and ready! I hope your weekend gave you that, and that your week ahead is a terrific one!

Wedged

#026

This is the first time I've actually posted 2 paintings in one day.... I'm just having so much fun with these mandarin bits that I can't help myself!  This time, I chopped them into wedges, tried to paint quickly, and then had fun with my small rubber chisel brush (removing thin squiggly lines of paint back down to the white gessoed surface).

On to different subject matter.... I've started eating these, and am putting some in my tea right now!

Hope your day is fun and fulfilling!

Ruby Red Oranges

#022

Our friends spent the Holidays in Florida and came back with the most deliciously sweet and juicy "oranges" I've ever had! Apparently, they were a cross between an orange and a Ruby Red grapefruit.  I say "were", because I cut the last one up today for this painting.

This painting was going great the first 20 minutes while I painted the orange chunks.  Then something happened and it began to unfold at a dismally slow pace as I pretty much destroyed the banana. I wish I had more of these oranges left so I could do this again. But alas, I finished this one off as soon as I gave up on the painting. Yum!  Thanks Eric and Merrily!

Reclining Pear

#013

Ok, ok.  Last pears for a while. I promise. This was painted, of course, on the same day as the others. I painted several that day because of a schedule filled with holiday activities.  My weekend was fantastic and festive, with lots of time spent with friends and family.  This week will be much the same, but I'm looking forward to finding more time for painting.

Happy Holidays and Happy Painting!

PLU #4419

#012

Another pear painting.  This one was actually painted the same day as my last two pear paintings (#009 and #010).  Once I buy fresh fruit, I tend to stick with it until it turns brown... or its gone because I ate it!

For some reason, when I paint several small paintings in one day, I seem to paint tighter and tighter with each one..... and maybe even with a more muted, less brilliant palette.   If anybody has any theories about that, I'd love to hear them!    Thanks for stopping by, and have a great day!

Mandarin

#003

This is about all I wanted to eat after enjoying Thanksgiving and black Friday a little too much.  Well, this and some of the leftover wassail.

I thought this painting turned out ok.  I like that it seems to be looser than normal, but think I could have zoomed in a bit more with my composition.... maybe because this is the first painting I've tried on an 8x8 canvas board. Hoping to find some 6x6 canvases soon.  I think I'll really like using that size for my daily paintings.
